Water for Elephants is about a guy that accidentally joins the circus and meets this woman who also works at the circus, who he wants to bang. But obstacles exist, mostly because otherwise the book would have no plot. Except for those kooky circus performers. Also, thereās an elephant.
For a book with so many positive reviews, I found Water for Elephants to be shockingly bad. At first, I thought it might be a fun, quick read. After a few chapters, I realized that the writing was pedestrian, the characters boring and unbelievable. By the halfway point, I contemplated chucking this out the window, and might have if it werenāt for the inconvenience of removing the screens (also, I think throwing objects from the top floor of a tall building on a busy street in a huge city = not legal, or safe).
Bad writing, I can sometimes look past. Cliched phrases, poorly-developed characters, these arenāt always deal breakers. Gratuitous violence towards animals isnāt exactly my cup of tea, but I wonāt discount a book because of it.
But
Imagine a book that included the same situation, but with two men forcing themselves on a woman who is too drunk to say no. Imagine that her friends later poke fun at her for not being about to achieve orgasm. Imagine that this is completely laughed off by the author. I sense a double standard here.
Anyway, my edition of Water for Elephants contains a ton of historical photographs of circuses, that appear before/after chapters that are completely unrelated. The pictures arenāt even that interesting. The actual text of the book is largely similar to the pictures: a selection poorly composed vignettes that felt haphazardly thrown together. Not worth the read.
